Before a movie is an actual movie, with real footage and a release date, it usually goes by a more modest name: a project. The word project usually refers to the status of a film before principal photography, meaning actual filming, has begun.
A project can be as simple as an idea, or as developed as a finished script with a director and some attached talent, but until filming starts, it is still just a project, not yet a real movie.
Fun facts
- Most projects never actually become movies, quietly stalling out somewhere along the way before ever getting a Green Light.
- A project can sit in Pre-Production for a long time before filming finally begins, or before it falls apart entirely.
- Once filming truly starts, people usually stop calling it a project and start calling it a movie, or simply "the film."
