Imagine the very first page of a book, listing the title and the author's name before the story even begins. A movie has its own version of that opening page, shown right at the start.

Main titles are the opening credits of a movie, usually showing the title itself along with some of the most important names involved, like the stars, the director, and sometimes the writer.

Fun facts

  • Whose name appears in the main titles, and in what order and size, is often a carefully negotiated contractual right for Talent, not just a creative decision.
  • Some films skip traditional main titles entirely, saving all the credits for the very end instead.
  • Main titles are one of the last things finalized, since they usually cannot be locked until the movie has reached its Final Cut.
